1/2/15:
In the spirit of New Year’s and the mass amount of college football that takes place New Year's Day I decided to take a closer look at this commercial that happened to capture my attention. The commercial included a star packed cast, a catchy spin on a well known song, and an unfit mournfulness. All of these contributed to a complex commercial forcing you to pay closer attention than normal.
The casting of this commercial had a huge effect. The few that stood out to be at first were Jimmy Kimmel, Josh Duhamel, Ken Jeong, Robin Thicke, and many more. The commercial included a wide variety of athletes, mascots, cheerleaders, etc. It appeals to an extremely wide audience as you are bound to recognize at least a portion of this extensive cast. They’re trying to make it seem like all of these people are going to contribute to a new tradition of New Year's Eve football. As if to say if Jimmy Kimmel is going to watch college football New Year’s Eve than you should too.
Lyrics of the song in the commercial:
This New Year's Eve will be so awesome
The stars have all aligned
So match your jerseys and cummerbunds cause now it's playoff time
It's playoff time my dear
It's playoff time
Footballs will spike when nine will strike
Cause now it's playoff time
Yes New Year's Eve will be so awesome
Watching college football through confetti
Missing out is not an option
So plan accordingly
The song lyrics really made it clear the true purpose of the commercials. That is that ESPN is trying to start a new tradition: college football is watched on New Year’s Eve. ESPN wants to make college football as the NFL is on Thanksgiving Day and the NBA is on Christmas. They are striving to create a new tradition among Americans.
As the dog goes on people seem to be happier with more smiles and more unity amongst the stars. Everybody joins in the singing like ESPN wants everyone to join into watching college football. The commercial has a lasting effect (mostly because of the song stuck in my head) on its viewers. I am interested to see if their tactics to make New Year’s Eve the college football night will succeed. As for me, I will have to stick to the traditional series of bowl on New Years Day for now.
